CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Paper Merchant first opened in St. Charles in 1981 before making downtown Geneva its home in 1990.

The small card store on the corner of South 3rd Street and Fulton Street is known for its stationery, unusual greeting cards, and even rubber chickens.

After 40 years, owner Pat Burnham announced her retirement and the closing of The Paper Merchant.

“We have absolutely loved celebrating your most important occasions with you - from picking out that perfect anniversary card, to printing birth announcements, to designing wedding invitations, and everything in between,” said Burnham on the website’s announcement. “I will forever be grateful for everyone who made these last 40 years possible. Staff, Customers, Reps, fellow small business owners, and my family. While it's bittersweet to say goodbye to the store, I know I have made many lifelong friendships and we will stay in touch.”

The Paper Merchant plans to hold a retirement sale Saturday, March 13 and will continue to sell any remaining merchandise and fixtures before a final farewell.

Evernia women’s fashion boutique is moving into the front half of the first floor while a second business has yet to be finalized.

All businesses on the second floor of the building will remain the same.
