CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Ground is expected to be broken early next year on a Far South Side greenhouse that will grow produce intended for people who have a hard time getting good, healthy food.
The 63,000-square-foot vertical greenhouse is expected to produce 560,000 pounds of produce a year. It’ll be located in the Pullman neighborhood on 104th Street, a couple of blocks east of Cottage Grove Avenue.
The hydroponic greenhouse will be four stories high and include a market, a commercial kitchen and a food depository.
Ald. Anthony Beale of the 9th Ward said a $1 million grant will help jump-start the project which is expected to cost $40 million.
The Greater Chicago Food Depository figured as many as 55% of the people who live in the Pullman and Roseland areas lack reliable access to food.
The greenhouse is expected to be completed sometime in 2023.
