(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Shedd Aquarium says three young unique and endangered fish have found refuge here in Chicago.

Bowmouth guitarfish are an odd-looking fish that seem to be part shark and part ray, with eyes on the top of their heads; technically, they are a species of ray.

The aquarium says the three “pups” were born after their mother was caught in a net in Taiwan last summer. They’re 11 months old now and each about 5 feet long (they can grow up to 8 feet). They each weigh about 80 pounds.

Noel Heinsohn, manager of Wild Reef at the Shedd, says the fish are “rare and elusive animals.”

“Apart from the wonder they inspire, caring for this critically endangered species offers a unique opportunity to learn about their needs, experience their spectacular behaviors and better advocate for their protection in the wild,” he said.
