HAMMOND, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Criminal charges are expected to be filed against a Hammond high school student accused of leaving a gun on a school bus that was later found by elementary school students.

Police identified the student who was alleged to have left the gun on the bus after viewing surveillance video. The younger kids who found the gun immediately gave it to the bus driver, according to the district.

He called it in and returned to the school where he was met by police who took the weapon and viewed the video from the camera on the bus.
The district said, in a statement, “Though we are very grateful our students immediately brought the firearm to the bus driver, we would ask all of our parents to please remind their children that unattended firearms should never be picked up, but immediately reported to the nearest adult.”

Aside from criminal charges, the district said any student who brings a deadly weapon onto school property – and that includes busses - faces a one-year expulsion.
