Heather Mack hopes for shorter prison sentence for federal murder conspiracy

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Heather Mack, the Chicago woman convicted of taking part in her mother’s murder in Bali in 2014, is hoping for a short prison sentence for her federal conspiracy conviction in Chicago.

Mack’s lawyers are asking for the minimum sentence of 15 years and credit for the time she served in Indonesia.

She spent seven years in prison there for her role in the murder of her mother, Sheila Von Wiese-Mack, who was beaten to death and stuffed in a suitcase.

Von Wiese-Mack and her daughter had argued in the hotel’s lobby after Heather Mack used her mother’s credit card to book a hotel room for her boyfriend, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Mack has acknowledged in the past that she had a troubled relationship with her mother.

Her boyfriend, Tommy Shaeffer, convicted of committing the crime, remains in jail. Mack was arrested at O’Hare when she returned after her release.

She pleaded guilty last June to murder conspiracy in federal court in Chicago and has been in custody since returning in 2021.
