(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois hunters are prohibited from using drones, officials emphasized as the Oct. 1 start of the fall hunting season approaches.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says it has received several inquiries about the use of unmanned aircraft to scout and track animals. It’s a non-starter, the agency says.

“Not only is drone use for hunting unlawful in Illinois, it goes against the spirit of fair chase and widely accepted hunting ethics,” Jed Whitchurch, director of the IDNR Office of Law Enforcement, said in a news release. “We encourage all hunters to familiarize themselves with the Wildlife Code, abide by the law, and have a safe and successful hunting season.”

Police will be monitoring hunters in the fall and winter seasons, and hunters who use drones illegally may have their property seized, officials said.
