Illinois Democrats release drafted legislative maps; Republicans voice complains

2020 United States Census

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The public will get a say starting Tuesday on the newly drafted state legislative maps that are were drawn by Democrats to account for the state’s newest population numbers.

Republicans are complaining that the Illinois House and Senate maps were drawn in secrecy by Democrats, using the "Mike Madigan playbook."

Every 10 years, state legislative and U.S. Congressional district maps must be redrawn based on U.S. Census figures; but because the specific block-by-block census data has been late in coming because of the pandemic, figures from the American Community Survey from 2019 were used.

Democrats headed those committee and said the maps used “suggestions gathered during more than 45 public hearings held across the state as legislators sought input on how to best ensure communities across Illinois receive fair and equal representation." They said the maps were designed to “ensure the broad racial and geographic diversity” of Illinois.
