(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A leading Illinois gun safety group is reacting to the Michigan State University mass shooting, and demanding lawmakers take steps to prevent similar incidents moving forward.

“It’s really hard to wrap my head around this,” said Kathleen Sances, president and CEO of Illinois’ Gun Violence Prevention PAC.

“We’ve had so many of these school shootings since Columbine,” she added. “We haven’t made any progress, except in the number of school shootings.”

She said the Michigan State situation is even harder to take, given anniversaries this week of shootings at Northern Illinois University, Henry Pratt in Aurora and Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Florida.

“How we honor the people that we’ve lost is by taking action and taking it quickly,” Sances said. “We have to keep talking about this.”

Locally, Sances said Illinois lawmakers must consider universal background checks and other restrictions on firearms, quickly.
