SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois House on Tuesday unanimously approved legislation to penalize Russia for its war in Ukraine.
The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, a Chicago Democrat, directs state pension funds to eliminate any investments in Russian-based companies, prepares the state to accept Ukrainian refugees and sets up a group to study Russian money-laundering in Illinois real estate.

The measure was OK'd 114-0 and moves to the Senate.
LaPointe added a provision to find ways to prevent foreign operatives from hacking into Illinois' election system and to require universities to report donations from entities on a federal sanctions list.
“What the Illinois House passed today won't stop Putin's war, but it ensures Illinois is collectively pulling every lever possible to support the Ukrainian people,” Illinois House Speaker Emmanuel Chris Welch, D-Chicago, said in a prepared statement, referring to Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin.
