Illinois would end testing requirements for senior drivers, under legislative proposal

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Legislation introduced in Springfield would end the requirement that people 75 or older take a driver’s test to renew their licenses.

State Rep. Jeff Keicher, a Republican whose district includes parts of Kane, DeKalb and Boone Counties, is behind the proposal.

“Illinois is the only state in the United States that does this,” he says. “I think it’s time we trust our seniors.”

Keicher has been an insurance agent for nearly 30 years. He told CBS 23 in Rockford that he knows seniors who have been driving for 60 years who have never had crashes or tickets.

State transportation officials say drivers over the age of 75 are involved in fewer crashes than any other age group, although there is an argument that they drive less and shorter distances.

Keicher says re-testing of older drivers should be based more on driving records than age.
