CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Cook County judge has found the Trump Tower in violation of state and federal laws over a water intake system used to cool the building that’s killing fish.

Judge Thaddeus Wilson wrote that the Trump Tower “has created and continues to create a public nuisance” and that the intake, which can draw 20 million gallons of water per day, operates “in a manner that substantially and unreasonably interferes with the public right to fish and otherwise recreate in the Chicago River.”

Friends of the Chicago River estimate that thousands of fish have been sucked into the system.

The water is discharged at a higher temperature.

A lawsuit was filed by the Attorney General’s office in 2018, alleging violation of environmental laws.

It will now seek civil penalties.
