(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — People who live along the Kankakee River in the Will County community of Wilmington can stay in their homes — but remain under a flash flood warning because of ice jams.
Will County’s Emergency Management Agency said it is using water from a cooling lake at the Dresden Generating Station to help melt ice on the Kankakee River.
Water used to cool down the nuclear power plant is warm enough to help cut through the ice jams, but it may take awhile to get things flowing again.
The agency and the city of Wilmington are warning residents to be alert for conditions to change quickly, especially people who live near low-lying areas of the river.
Officials said they should be ready to evacuate on short notice. Temperatures are not expected to get above freezing until Monday.
