(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new Illinois law will help families of children killed by gun violence pay for funeral expenses.

The law creates a fund to pay up to $10,000 dollars for the funeral of a child killed by gun violence directly to funeral homes and cemeteries.

In the past, families had to pay those costs and later seek reimbursement from the state.

Dr. Dave Nayak heads the Strength to Love Foundation, which helps families of children killed by gun violence.

"To directly pay service providers up to $10,000 for funerals and burials for children under the age of 17, who are murdered by gun violence," he said.

Supporters said the law is part of a broader strategy to reduce gun violence in Illinois, while providing more support to victims and their families.
