(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Roughly two-thirds of Americans consider federal income tax, state sales tax and local property taxes to be too high, according to a study released earlier this week from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and the Associated Press.
“Whether it is local, state, or federal taxes, most people want lower taxes and are skeptical of the value they receive from these taxes,” said David Sterrett, a principal research scientist with The AP-NORC Center. “Many people view these taxes as unfair and believe they are most burdensome on middle-income families.”
About one-third of adults polled don’t believe they are getting a value reflective of the taxes that they pay, and less than 25% of those surveyed believed that they do receive valuable services from paying taxes.
The poll further showed that Republicans were 10% more likely than Democrats to describe their taxes as unfair.
Researchers began the study in December 2023 and said over 1,000 adults completed the survey.
The full study can be found here.
