CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 21-year-old man has died after he was shot inside of a residential building in the city's Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the Far South Side early Tuesday morning.
It happened around 1:15 a.m., Chicago police said. A man was standing in the hallway of an apartment building near Ashland Avenue and 82nd Street when another man walked in and started shooting.
Police said the 21-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest but later died. It wasn't clear what led up to the violent attack.
Chicago police statistics show that in its 6th District — where the shooting took place — 19 people were murdered between the start of the year and March 31, which is up slightly from the same time period in 2023.
No one is in custody. The shooting is now under investigation.
