(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Maywood man accused of shooting a fully automatic firearm in a Villa Park neighborhood this week was denied bond on Friday.
Curtis Lyons, 37, is charged with one count of armed habitual criminal, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and two counts of unlawful use of weapon by a felon/machine gun – all Class X felonies – the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
Village Park police on Wednesday evening responded to a call of shots fired in the area of Chatham and Plymouth. Officers found numerous shell casings at the intersection.
Police say they determined Lyons had come to the area to sell drugs when he opened fire and discharged more than 30 bullets, one of which struck a nearby home. Lyons was located in a residence on Cornell, where officers allegedly found a 9mm Glock 19 with a fully automatic “switch,” other weapons and ammunition and $7,000 in cash.
“It is alleged that Mr. Lyons put an entire neighborhood at risk when he fired more than thirty shots in a matter of seconds,” DuPage State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “This type of violent, criminal conduct, as alleged against Mr. Lyons, will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force and effect of the law.”
Lyons’ next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 23.
