CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Even though a majority of the Chicago City Council backed a resolution calling for the firing or resignation of CTA president Dorval Carter, the measure has been sidetracked.
Twenty-nine members of the City Council signed on to the resolution.
Its chief sponsor, 40th Ward Ald. Andre Vazquez called it a vote of no confidence in Carter, as the CTA has struggled to recover service and staffing levels since the pandemic.
But, 9th Ward Ald. Anthony Beale and 28th Ward Ald. Jason Ervin moved the resolution to a City Council committee, where measures are sometimes sent to die.
Ervin defended Carter’s performance, including efforts to secure additional federal funding.
When asked about Carter, Mayor Johnson had positive things to say about the CTA.
“Last Wednesday, for the first time, we reached over a million riders in one day…You continue to see that trend,” Johnson said. “Our better streets for buses, that is still moving forward, making sure that we’re providing resources, particularly around our infrastructure.”
As for Carter's future, Johnson said he doesn't publicly discuss personnel matters.
“A public transportation system that’s reliable and affordable, accessible is at the heart and core of my values, so I’m grateful that ridership is up and that we’re hiring more people,” added Johnson.
