5-year-old migrant dies while staying at South Side shelter

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago police are investigating after a five-year-old boy staying at a migrant shelter in Pilsen died Sunday.

The boy was staying at a warehouse near Halsted and Cermak that was transformed into a City-run shelter when, Chicago Police said, he complained he wasn’t feeling well. It was around 2:45 p.m. Sunday when paramedics took the boy to Comer Children’s Hospital where he died an hour later.

There are a lot of questions at this time. The Cook County Medical Examiner is performing an autopsy and has identified the child as 5-year-old Jean Carlos Martinez Rivero.

Area Three detectives are investigating.
