(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A celebrated amenity of Millennium Park is closing indefinitely in a week - the bike station that catered to commuters.
When former Mayor Richard M Daley officially opened the station in July of 2004, he called it another step toward making Chicago one of the nation’s most bike- friendly cities.
The $3 million dollar station has a glass atrium and solar panels. Users did not have to pay for parking spaces, but did for the showers and locker rooms. The Chicago Sun-Times reports the city cited a declining business environment since the pandemic for the closure.
A spokesman for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events said they’re looking for the best use for the space going forward.
Kyle Lucas, a founder of the transit advocacy group Better Streets Chicago said the closure shows the Lightfoot administration's lack of vision and courage to chart a path forward for better mobility.
