CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Court-ordered negotiations are continuing between the Cook County government and SEIU 73 union members. Cook County government employees have been on strike now for three days after contract talks ended with no signatures Thursday night.
SEIU Local 73 members began Sunday morning as they did the day before — at Stroger Hospital with a picket line and rally demanding that Cook County government provided staff with a fair contract.
Erica White, a 30-year Cook County employee, told WBBM those working under Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle were dubbed pandemic heroes and deserve a decent wage.
"Cook County government never shut down during the pandemic, even when some of the county buildings closed during the pandemic many of us, myself included, took our work home," White said.
More than 2,000 Cook County workers will remain on strike until a fair contract has been reached, White said.
"We lose pay every day we're out here on this street. But we want President Preckwinkle to know we're willing to do it because it's just that important to us,” she said.
