CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The mother owl from a family that made a home in the North Pond Nature Sanctuary in Lincoln Park was found dead Thursday.
The Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, volunteers who collect injured and dead birds in the Loop during migration season, posted the news on Facebook.
The post said the mother owl was found dead, covered in blood, on a sidewalk in Lincoln Park.
The Chicago Bird Collision Monitors said the owl was observed throughout the week with concerns that she showed signs of uncontrolled bleeding, which could indicate ingestion of rat poison from prey she found.
They also noted residents and nature lovers are dismayed at the profusion of rat poison traps that encircle buildings around North Pond.
“Rodent control with dangerous poisons must not be allowed to endanger our local wildlife.” they wrote. “[We] Demand that Chicago [and all municipalities] find non-toxic methods for pest control.”
Test results suggested the owl’s mate and a fledgling also died after ingesting rat poison.
