CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In March, prosecutors said 62-year-old Klent Elwoods and his wife Lisa Jones, 57, visited Elwoods’ daughter in Georgia. As a favor, they offered to take her daughter, 5-year-old Jada Moore, back to Illinois to live with them.

Prosecutors said Jones admitted that — soon after they brought Jada into their Park Forest home — she and Elwoods began abusing Jada with their hands, shoes and a belt.

On Friday, authorities said Elwoods called 911 and said, “I was beating my little granddaughter, and now she’s out of it.”

Responding officers found Jada unresponsive and naked on a couch. Officers also found a calendar in the home, which marked each time Jada had an accident.

Jada was hospitalized and pronounced dead the following day. Her death was ruled a homicide due to child abuse.

An autopsy revealed that Jada had injuries similar to car accident victims, as well as serious brain injuries.

Elwoods and Jones were charged with first-degree murder and were denied bond. They’re due back in court in August.
