CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is seeing a shakeup in leadership, with its president retiring and a new female president taking the wheel.

It comes in the wake of Dorval Carter Jr.’s retirement. The announcement follows years of criticism over safety and service issues.

The agency said that longtime CTA Chief of Staff Nora Leerhsen will be taking over as acting president next month. She will become the first woman to lead the way in the CTA's 77-year history.

Leerhsen joined the agency in 2014 and became chief of staff in 2018.

The CTA said she’s overseen everything from operations and safety compliance to communications and employee programs.

While Dorval Carter Jr. is technically retiring from the CTA, he has announced that his future includes a new role as the head of St. Anthony Hospital in North Lawndale.
