MICHIGAN CITY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The heavy rain that moved through the Chicago area Tuesday afternoon led to some big problems for several drivers in Northwest Indiana.
The Indiana State Police started getting calls from drivers with flat tires after they ran over potholes that opened up along I-94 around U.S. 421 near Michigan City.
Sergeant Glen Fifield said many of the potholes were recently filed by road crews.
“The heavy amount of rain we’ve had has washed out the cold patch that the Indiana Department of Transportation had previously filled potholes with. That’s washed out and is creating large potholes that a lot of the cars and trucks are hitting and it’s causing the flat tires,” Fifield said.
Fifield said the potholes can open up without warning and many were catching drivers by surprise.
He said drivers need to keep an eye out for them, especially in areas where potholes were recently repaired.
“The quicker that pothole is going to open up and wash out, the deeper it’s going to get, especially with the continued rain. It’s going to be a challenge for INDOT, our Indiana Department of Transportation, to get out there and get those taken care of,” Fifield said.
