OAK PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Teachers for a west suburban high school spoke out Thursday night in favor of a plan to increase security in their building and the school board is leaning in favor of that plan.
Disciplinary infractions are up at Oak Park River Forest High School, with the administration reporting the students having a tough time readjusting to being back inside the school building since COVID hit and are acting out more and aggressively, with fights. The administration proposes hiring six more security people.
Teacher Toni Biasiello was among those arguing in favor of the plan, pointing out that adults who work in the building have been physically hurt while doing their jobs.
"Students can’t learn if they don’t feel safe. Our security staff helps them feel safe. They do so much to create relationships with our kids. They show tremendous professionalism,” Biasiello said.
The school board’s Committee of the Whole agreed to the plan, but board members were concerned about finding ways to offset the cost, which will be $60,000 for the rest of this school year and nearly $300,000 for all of the next school year.
