Fourth grade students at St. Procopius School in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood are celebrating their first-place win in a first-of-its-kind National Catholic School Spelling Bee.
The students paraded through the halls of the school, lined with cheering kids, holding up their trophy with gold medals draped around their necks.
Lucy, Anna and Emilio are on the team that won by one point, 43 to 42.
"I couldn't be more thrilled for our students. I know that the families and students worked so hard for this. And it's a great opportunity for our school and our students to have accomplished this. And we couldn't be prouder," said Principal Dr. Robert Bassett.
The spelling bee, that was in Spanish and was organized by Notre Dame for dual-language schools across the country, was done on Zoom and the kids from around the country worked in teams.
