CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Investigators, relatives, and friends are still trying to unravel the mystery of the 30-year-old man, who died in a Streeterville apartment surrounded by chemicals and explosive materials.
Theodore Hilk, 30, was found dead last week by police officers who were conducting a well-being check.
Police said his father drove from suburban Kansas City to Chicago on Tuesday to check on his son, because he had not heard from him and was concerned about his well-being. Upon arrival, Hilk’s father Wayne Hilk, who had a key to the unit, was unable to open the door, because it seemed to be blocked from the inside. That is when he called police.
During the well-being check, officers discovered Hilk's decomposing body in the 7th floor apartment in the 200 block of East Illinois Street. They also found a volatile chemical that's used in bomb triggers and airbags.
The Sun-Times reported police are still investigating Hilk's death and the purpose of the chemicals and explosive materials found in the apartment.
Hilk was a graduate of MIT. In high school his father said he achieved perfect scores on the SAT and ACT college entrance exams.
The results of an autopsy are pending.
