(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Faculty at a community college are one step closer to going on strike.

The College of DuPage Faculty Association has overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike. In order for a walkout to occur, the union would have to give a 10-day notice -- something it has not yet done.

The faculty say in a statement that the labor dispute is about more than finances. They say they are pushing to save the jobs of 18 part-time counsellors.

There are ten full-time positions, and faculty say mental health services are needed by students.

College administrators say they are committed to bargaining in good faith with faculty, with help from a federal mediator.

“We value our expert faculty and the services and support they provide to the College in our mutual interest of advancing student success,” a prepared statement said.
