CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - 35th Ward Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa has announced he will step down as Mayor Johnson's City Council floor leader as well as chairman of the Zoning Committee following last week’s physical altercation that had with a fellow alderman.
Last Thursday, Ramirez-Rosa was accused of trying to physically restrain 37th Ward Ald. Emma Mitts from entering a special meeting at City Hall regarding Chicago’s sanctuary city status. The meeting was scrapped because it failed to reach the minimum number of aldermen required to conduct a meeting.
“Tensions were high at a chaotic meeting, and I let that get the best of me, leading me to act in a way unbecoming of a leader,” Ramirez-Rosa said in a statement. “I sincerely apologize to my colleague, Alderwoman Emma Mitts, for the disrespectful interaction outside of Council Chambers.”
Mayor Brandon Johnson acknowledged Ramirez-Rosa’s resignation in a statement and hopes the disagreement that exists within City Council over the migrant crisis does not continue to prevent the City from governing.
“It is not lost on me that Thursday’s events occurred during a time of heightened tension at City Hall,” said Johnson. “In recent months, the forces of division have preyed on our city, pitting us against each other in the most destructive ways. I am confident we will find a way to move forward and regain the trust and respect necessary to have a functioning legislative body."
Mitts has yet to comment on Ramirez-Rosa’s decision.
