CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An oppressive, potentially dangerous heat wave is on the horizon.

A blast of extreme heat is expected to arrive tomorrow and stick around through Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Illinois Counties such as Cook, DuPage, Lake, McHenry, Kane, Will, De Kalb, Kendall, Grundy, and Kankakee. The warning is in effect tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

An Excessive Heat Watch will be in place Wednesday night through Thursday night.

Tomorrow appears to be the hottest of the two days. The forecasted high temperature will be 98 degrees, according to AccuWeather. It would break the current record of 97, set in 1947. Combined with a high level of humidity, the NWS says heat indices will be between 110 and 115. With conditions that hot, the NWS warns the risk of suffering heat related illnesses, such as a heat stroke, grow significantly.

There won’t be much relief overnight Wednesday. Lows are expected to sit around 80 degrees for much of the Chicago metro area, with heat indices near 90 throughout the night.

The oppressive heat will continue Thursday, but the severity will depend on the timing of a cold front. Area wide, heat indices are forecasted to still between 105 and 115. Most likely, the NWS says, the front will be slower moving, and, as a result, there could be late afternoon cooling near the Lake.

A faster front would result in cooler and less humid conditions for the city and near suburbs, but extreme heat would remain for areas south.
The good news: the heat wave should exit by the weekend. Although it will still be muggy, AccuWeather says temps will cool off into the lower 80s on Friday.

Initial weekend forecasts look even better, with high temps hovering in the upper 70s paired with comfortable and breezy conditions.
