CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Most election results are in from Tuesday’s municipal elections in the suburbs, and there’ll be some new faces in many mayor’s offices.
At least three communities elected their first women mayors. Those include Ann Taylor in Waukegan, who beat one-term mayor Sam Cunningham; Michelle Nelson in Flossmoor, who becomes the first woman mayor in the village’s nearly 100 year history; and, Tiffany Henyard in Dolton.
Additionally, a couple of suburban mayors under federal scrutiny have easily won re-election.
Crestwood Mayor Lou Presta is charged with accepting a $5,000 bribe to promote a certain red-light camera company, but easily won re-election Tuesday. And Lyons Mayor Chris Getty overwhelmingly beat his challenger. He is under federal investigation, but said he has not committed any crimes.
Meanwhile, in north suburban Mettawa, Jess Ray was the only person on the ballot for mayor and picked up 104 votes, but current mayor Casey Urlacher ran a write-in campaign and those votes have not yet been counted. Urlacher was pardoned by former President Trump on gambling-related charges.
North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham has won a fifth term in office.
And in Elmhurst, in the three-way race to replace Mayor Steve Morley who decided not to run for a third term, longtime alderman Scott Levin has been elected.
Additionally, in the hard-fought mayor’s race in Orland Park, first-term mayor Keith Pekau appears to have held off a challenge from former mayor Dan McLaughlin.
And in Illinois’ second largest city, Aurora, Mayor Richard Irvin easily won re-election to a second term.
