Citing the need for students to learn without relying on AI, the University of Chicago Law School is banning electronics in the classroom.
First year law students will not be allowed to use laptops, phones and other electronic devices in class starting this fall.
Exams will be held in class without internet access, electronic files or apps.
UChicago’s Law School announced its AI-resilient approach Thursday after a year-long review.
In a statement called “Rethinking Legal Education in the AI Era”, the school said it does not want to deter students from using AI to help them clarify concepts or to practice problems while studying, but it must ensure students actually learn to think critically without relying on the tool.
The law school points out it has already added AI-focused courses and intends to offer more for upper level students.
