(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Schools in Evanston-Skokie District 65 have seen enrollment decline for the sixth straight year.
Enrollment is currently just over 6,600 in 2022, and District 65 has lost about 1,400 students over the past five years. That includes a decrease of 421 students since 2021.
At a school board meeting Monday night, officials said some students enrolled in private schools that opened sooner than public schools during the COVID-19 shutdown.
Sarita Smith, with District 65, tells Evanston Now there are a number of factors and that this is happening around the country.
Young, married couples, she said, are “having fewer children.”
Other families can’t afford to live in Evanston, she said. They’re being priced out.
The district is working with a demographer to get a better look at what’s happening and to plan for the future.
