Authorities said the skeletal remains were found about 12:20 p.m. near the northbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway at Webster Avenue.
State police were contacted by the Chicago Police Department because the bones were found in an embankment area on state property.
As of 5:30 p.m. Sunday, it wasn’t clear whether the skeletal remains were human.
In its statement, ISP said it was still early in its investigation, and officials had no additional details to share.
