CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- State Representative Kam Buckner said he is launching a campaign to challenge Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot for her job.
26th District Representative Kam Buckner represents people along the Lakefront from Hyde Park to the Gold Coast. He’s worked in the private sector, for nonprofits and for Senator Dick Durbin.
Buckner calls himself a “Son of the City, ” born and raised in Chicago and extremely sad to see that the city is not living up to its promise.
"I really do understand Chicago's issues-the hurdles we have to overcome."
He said he’s running for mayor, because many people feel there’s no plan to better their lives.
"If people in the city, one- don't feel safe, two-they don't feel heard, they don't feel there's a plan for their growth, for their development, for their quality of life, then we're doing a lot wrong, so we've got to have a real conversation about that and a plan to move the city and its people forward."
On crime, he said any plan must balance the need to ensure people are safe with justice as a recognition of the city's history with policing.
When asked how you can hold police officers accountable without the rank and file feeling persecuted, Buckner said you can do that by making sure "everyone’s” at the table, and he will.
