CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For the first time in several years, more students are enrolling in Chicago Public Schools.
Data shared at a CPS board meeting shows a 0.4 percent increase in the student population over the past year.
"Ladies and gentlemen this is the first time in a decade that CPS has seen this level of stability in our enrollment," said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez.
He also said pre-school students in particular are enrolling more.
"This is a direct result of the fact that we've expanded free and full-day pre-k to virtually every neighborhood in Chicago. It is exciting to see many more young learners in CPD building a foundation for gains in early literacy, socio and emotional development, and so much more."
Martinez also said more students in temporary living situations and English learners are enrolling.
"This has been a trend we've been seeing for several years, which makes us more committed than ever to providing students with the resources that will meet their unique needs."
