(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Organizers of this month's Democratic National Convention in Chicago know the gathering will make headlines. They are also hoping to nurture a new generation of reporters to cover the news.

Christy George, executive director of the DNC 2024 Host Committee says they have kept their promises to involve all of Chicago's neighborhoods in the activities, and have a truly diverse group of contractors.

But she tells WBBM the Committee's chief spokesperson, Natalie Edelstein Jarvis, developed something new.

"We will have kids from all over the state, not just the city of Chicago, but all over the state represented inside of the United Center reporting every night on what is happening. This will blow all past conventions out of the water."

George says the largest contingent ever of student journalists at a convention has been put together.

George says the young journalists will witness and report on history when Kamala Harris becomes the first Black woman to be the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. She says it's something they will always remember and it could change some lives.

Preparations for the Democratic Convention are the topic of the At Issue program this weekend and you can hear more Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m.
