(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- When agents went to a Waukegan home to arrest a man early Tuesday, he was wanted for gunrunning. Now, he's facing five counts of attempted murder.
The Lake County Sheriff's office and ATF agents had been keeping tabs on 29-year-old Alvaro Grijalva for some time, officials say, because he is a convicted felon and a street gang member and sold guns to undercover agents.
So, they went to his Waukegan home to arrest him.
But Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli says when the agents got there, Grijalva started shooting.
"Grijalva opened fire through a back door, almost striking two ATF agents, and in one case came within inches of striking the ATF agent,” he tells WBBM Newsradio.
Covelli says agents used flash-bang devices to get inside the home and arrest Grijalva, who was in the Lake County jail. He was expected in court for a bond hearing Wednesday.
