Tinley Park man charged with murdering wife, 3 adult daughters

TINLEY PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man has been charged for the weekend murders of a woman and three adult daughters inside their Tinley Park home.

Police announced 63-year-old Maher Kassem faces four counts of first degree murder. He’s alleged to have shot and killed his wife, 53-year-old Majeda Kassem, and three adult daughters, 25-year-old twins, Halema and Zahia, and 24-year-old Hanan Kassem.

The incident occurred Sunday morning inside their home near 173rd Place and Osceola. Police allege the murders were domestic in nature, with Kassem believed to have shot and killed his family during a verbal argument.

Detectives said Maher shortly thereafter called police, saying someone had just got shot.

Officers arrived on the scene and then found the four women in the lower level of the residence.

Maher made comments related to his involvement in the incident and was then arrested without incident.

Monday, Tinley Park Police and community leaders held a press conference discussing the tragedy.

"This is about power and control. This is about gender-based violence. And this is at this point, whether it's this case or any other case, this is not something the community condones,” Itedal Shalabi with the Arab American Family Services told reporters.

Tinley Park Police Chief Tom Tilton said it's the deadliest attack in the suburb in 15 years. He commended first responders for their quick response and said mental health resources are available for them.
