CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As White Sox fans clamor to get their hands on playoff tickets, a different Sox ticket drama is to be playing out in federal court.
The federal trial is scheduled to begin Friday for a former ticket broker accused of being part of a scheme to sell illegally generated White Sox tickets. The alleged scam cost the White Sox $1 million.
Bruce Lee, 35, of Chicago, ran Great Tickets and allegedly sold thousands of Sox tickets on StubHub at less than face value prices.
He allegedly received the tickets from two Sox employees, who live in New Lenox, 67-year-old James Costello and 52-year-old William O’Neil. They have pleaded guilty to generating complementary and discount game tickets in exchange for cash from Lee.
The White Sox sniffed out the scam when they saw that Lee was selling thousands more Sox tickets than any other broker, and that they involved complimentary ticket vouchers normally given by the team to sponsors, youth groups, and friends and family. The Sox called the FBI.
