URBANA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign may be kicked out of school for not following a quarantine order.

Xavier Josephs was notified he had contact with someone who had tested positive for COVID-19 and had to temporarily move into a quarantine dorm. He refused.

“That would have essentially put my health at risk,” Josephs told CBS 2 Chicago.

Th university said that’s not true because COVID-19-positive students aren’t in that dorm.

Josephs told CBS 2 that he was fired from his job as a resident assistant and was being kicked out of his dorm. He said he tested negative twice and doesn’t believe he was in contact with someone with the virus.

“I have remote classes, and I don’t see many people. It’s easy to narrow down who I see and when I see them,” he said.

The assistant dean wrote to him that he was given instructions and failed to follow them and that’s a dismissible offense.

“I really believe that they’re trying to make an example out of me and my situation,” Josephs said.

More than 33,000 undergraduate students attend the university and it has kicked out 16 students for not following coronavirus-related rules.

The university has administered 519,875 total COVID-19 saliva tests since July 6. On Friday, it reported 10 COVID-19 cases. The university reported its highest number to date -- 230 cases -- on Aug. 31.
