A fundraiser for Uprising Bakery has exceeded its goal, but it’s unclear what’s next for the business that’s been the subject of protests since announcing a drag brunch this past August.
The online fundraiser has brought in over $35,000 - well over its original goal - but owner Corinna Sac told WBBM she doesn’t know what it means for Uprising. She plans to discuss with her staff and decide together in five or six days if they’ll move to a location that she said would be "more accepting" - as well as smaller with lower rent.
Or if the bakery and cafe that’s become a target of both protesters and supporters, because of a drag queen brunch, will stay in Lake in the Hills. Sac said she’s not sure that’s sustainable.
The local head of the Anti-Defamation League started the fundraiser, saying the bakery has lost business due to vandalism and protests following the announcement of the drag bunch.
