CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After an off-duty Cook County Sheriff's officer is shot, residents in Archer Heights and Garfield Ridge are calling on more surveillance due to a surge of crime in the area.
A group of community activists gathered where the 37-year-old off-duty officer was shot multiple times near 47th and Cicero. The officer was near the location when he observed suspects in two different vehicles exchanging gunfire as they drove northbound on Cicero.
The activists said in a statement that there has been a major rise in crime in the area.
"There is a surge of shootings, prostitution, drag racing and much more especially down Cicero Ave," they wrote. " Also a Cook County inmate was beaten to death in a fight on Thursday morning in the jail. It is ironic how a Cook County sheriff and a Cook county inmate were victims of violence in the sane day."
A reward of $2,500 is being offered to capture all involved in the shooting.
