WILMETTE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Residents tried to persuade the Wilmette Village Board last night to reject an agreement over construction and concerts at a rebuilt Ryan Field, but trustees approved it over their objections.
Like their Evanston neighbors, Wilmette residents complained about the noise and traffic from construction and concerts at the stadium as well as declining value of properties.
Resident and attorney Lisa Esayian calls the inter-governmental agreement with Evanston weak.
"You do have a golden thing, which is to challenge the zoning ordinance and you're giving it up for this," she said addressing the trustees.
Carl Hopman, another resident said: "I urge you to imagine what you will say to your grandchildren in 10 or 20 years when they ask you what happened on that fateful night of February 13, 2024 if you give up the peace and quiet of Wilmette, which make it a little paradise on the North Shore."
The trustees said the agreement will let Wilmette address issues of concern right away instead of waiting for a potentially long and protracted legal debate and voted unanimously to approve it.
