(WWJ) Authorities are warning beachgoers and residents along the Lake Michigan shoreline about three missing, active phosphorous pyrotechnics.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the three cylinders did not explode as intended during a military exercise involving the U.S. Air Force earlier this month near Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The silver cylinders can make red smoke and a flame that can reach 2,900 degrees. The Coast Guard says there were four pyrotechnics that went into the water earlier this month and didn't explode.

One washed up on shore in Illinois on Memorial Day and was found by a lifeguard. These pyrotechnics are still considered armed when they do not activate.

The Coast Guard is warning all beachgoers to remain clear and contact 911 should they locate a silver cylinder along the beach.
