A Hammond, Indiana-based trucking company that was in operation for nearly 80 years hauled its last load of mail earlier this year.
Now, the company’s assets are being auctioned off.
Creviston Trucking started hauling bulk mail for the US Postal Service in 1948 and that continued for nearly 80 years.
The company moved mail from the Gary Post Office to regional post offices in Northwest Indiana and the Chicago area, starting with deliveries to trains and helicopters.
It was always a family operation, led most recently by Cindy Creviston, who is now retired.
“Back in the 40s I can honestly say that with Randy – Randy Creviston was my husband – and his parents, they would literally take the mail from the Gary Post Office and they would bring it to the trains, they would bring it to the helicopters and then they would move it from there, so that was even before the trucks,” Cindy Creviston said in a phone interview with WBBM.
Helicopters were used to move mail in the 1940s and 1950s in larger cities, including Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.
In October 1946, the Post Office Department conducted a 3-week experiment using helicopters to carry mail in the Chicago area. Chicago received regular helicopter service in 1949. Helicopters also carried mail in Los Angeles and New York. Then came better roads and better trucks.
Cindy Creviston said the company’s first truck, in 1948, was a dump truck.
"The mail came in these canvas bags. They would just have a tag on it. This one goes to this train station, this one goes to the helicopter. That's how it used to be done," she said.
Regarding closing up shop and retiring, she said, "Believe me, it was a very tough decision to even consider, but I decided it's time to retire and so, yes, I made that decision and I'm very happy about it."
She said the company's drivers have been hired by another company taking over the Creviston routes.
The company’s assets, including more than 60 trucks and trailers, are being auctioned on-line by Orbitbid.com.

Creviston Trucking has deep roots in the Northwest Indiana transportation industry. According to the company's history, Creviston has transported U.S. Mail under contract with the United States Postal Service since 1948, moving mail between postal processing centers and smaller post offices throughout Northwest Indiana and Northeast Illinois. During its years of operation, the company developed a significant regional delivery network, at one time completing more than 5,000 scheduled stops each week. Creviston also received the United States Postal Service's Eagle Spirit Award for Excellence.

The semi-truck lineup includes Volvo, International and Mack tractors spanning multiple model years, including several late-model units.

The straight-truck fleet includes International, Hino and Freightliner trucks, many equipped with 24-foot cargo bodies and liftgates. The trailer offering includes 45-foot and 53-foot dry vans from Stoughton, Wabash, Great Dane, Utility and Trailmobile.

Beyond the trucks and trailers, the auction provides a look inside the infrastructure required to maintain a commercial transportation fleet.
Creviston maintained its own terminal and repair operation, and the liquidation includes a substantial selection of truck parts, maintenance equipment and shop assets accumulated through the company's operations.
Items include truck and trailer components, Volvo and International parts, Hino parts, filters, batteries, brake components, liftgate parts, shop presses, welding equipment, jacks, jack stands, tire-service equipment, parts organizers, hand and power tools, maintenance fluids and additional shop supplies.

The retirement liquidation marks the closing of that chapter while giving other trucking companies, business owners and equipment buyers the opportunity to put Creviston's trucks, trailers and support equipment back to work.
