Tonawanda, NY (WBEN/AP) - Amazon says it's opening a new delivery station in the town of Tonawanda.

Construction is already underway at Riverview Solar Technology Park, a 200-acre sustainable business park the Town of Tonawanda. The site is expected to open some time in 2020.

“We want to thank Amazon for their continued investment in the Buffalo Niagara region, this being their second significant project in our community," said Thomas Kucharski, President and CEO of Invest Buffalo Niagara. "Through collaborative partnerships with the public and private sectors and a shovel-ready site that facilitated a swift site selection process, our region was able to capture the interest and investment of a leading global company like Amazon.”

Then announcement comes as Amazon's push for faster delivery is hurting its profits.

The online retailer said third-quarter profit fell 26% from a year ago, missing Wall Street expectations. Its stock sunk 6.5% in after-hours trading. Amazon is moving to cut its delivery time in half, to one day instead of two, for Prime members who pay $119 a year. The company said that it's costing the company about $1.5 billion to make the switch, nearly double what it expected.

Amazon said that Delivery Stations give the company capabilities to support the growing volume of customer orders. Amazon says the station will create hundreds of part time and full time jobs.

Amazon says Delivery Stations also offer unique jobs delivering for Amazon Flex. The idea works as sort of an Uber for delivering packages.
