BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The New York State Assembly could vote as early as Tuesday on a bill which would give illegal aliens the ability to obtain a driver's license in the state.
The bill has already received unanimous opposition from republicans in Albany. Those republicans, including state senator Chris Jacobs, argue that giving a driver's license to undocumented immigrants could create "rampant vote fraud" and it would affect recent DMV infrastructure related to voter registration.
"I think this is really a federal problem that needs a federal solution," Assemblywoman Monica Wallace told WBEN. "We can't try to solve every single failed policy at the state level. This is a perfect example of that. Immigration is a real issue. We've been saying that for decades."
In a statement, Assemblyman Patrick Burke said he will also vote no when the bill reaches the Assembly floor.
Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples Stokes is among the co-sponsors of the bill in the assembly.
The Green Light bill does not have as much support in the state senate according to Governor Andrew Cuomo. The state's Democratic Party chairman also expressed concerns about the bill, saying that its passage may lead to the democrats losing seats in the senate in next year's election.
As of Monday evening, the Green Light bill is not on Tuesday's Assembly floor calendar.
