Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - With oppressive heat and humidity on the way, the city of Buffalo and Niagara Falls are opening cooling centers for the weekend.

The list of participating cooling centers in Buffalo will be updated HEREas well as a complete list of City pools and splashpads.

Niagara Falls Mayor Paul A. Dyster and John Caso, Director of Parks and Public Worksannounced extended pool and air conditioned cooling center hours to offset high temperatures forecastedthrough the weekend. With hot and humid conditions expected through Saturday the following city poolswill hold extended hours on Thursday and Friday from 11 am until 6 pm for those in need:● Center Court● D'Amelio Park● 91st Street● Hyde Park Splash Pad

The city will also hold pool hours at the following locations Saturday:● Center Court (11 am - 2:30 pm)● 91st Street (2:30 pm - 4:30 pm)

In addition, the John Duke Senior Center will hold extended cooling center hours from 8 am until 6pm on Thursday and Friday.

Those at greatest risk for heat-related illness include infants and children up to four years of age, andthose 65 years or older.

The Niagara Falls Fire Department asks that residents take the following steps to avoid heat-relatedillness or injury:● Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as possible● Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty● Schedule outdoor activities carefully● Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen● Take cool showers or baths to cool down● Never leave children or pets in cars
