BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – Actor John Krasinski’s latest movie project, A Quiet Place 2, will begin filming later this month with areas around Buffalo and Western New York serving as the backdrop in several of the scenes.

But this region was never initially thought of as the filming location. The executive producer of the film, JoAnn Perritano, told WBEN that the early plan was to film the movie elsewhere in New York State.

“Our production designer started driving around and stumbled upon these beautiful old steel mills you have here,” Perritano said. “That sort of started it. They were very iconic.”

Perritano, who works primarily out of Los Angeles, California, said she’s pleasantly surprised by Buffalo’s small-town feel yet it’s a decently sized city.

The movie will begin filming in a couple of weeks. Perritano said the cast and crew will work for 50 days in various areas of the region, with the goal to finish by Labor Day.

“We try to publicize it the best we can,” she said. “It’s definitely out there. I’m sure we’ll be having another one out there in a couple weeks for the second part of the movie. Keep in tune. Check the internet, read your local newspapers, listen to you guys.”

Of the 1,300 people in the casting call, she said about a couple hundred were selected and it gets narrowed down from there.

“This particular film is, for the most part, contemporary,” Perritano said. “It’s a specific look for a specific scene…That’s usually what extras in the background is about.”

While filmmakers can turn any town into whatever type of scene they want, Perritano said Buffalo has a lot to offer.

“Your downtown architecture is pretty cool,” she said. “You’ve got the waterfront. Then you’ve got the rural areas and small towns.”

John Krasinski has been seen on several occasions in the region, spawning the #KrasinskiWatch on social media.
